Smith River National Recreation Area Expansion Act
Sponsor: Jeff Merkley (D-OR)
What it does
- Expands the Smith River National Recreation Area to include additional lands within Oregon and California by updating boundary definitions and adding a new map dated January 23, 2023.
- Directs the Secretary of Agriculture to conduct a study within five years of enactment to inventory streams, wetlands, water features, plants, and wildlife in the proposed additions and modify management plans to protect inventoried values.
- Requires the Secretary to acquire the approximately 555-acre Cedar Creek Parcel in Oregon upon adoption of a resolution by the State Land Board of Oregon and subject to available funding.
- Clarifies that the expansion does not restrict wildfire management or vegetation management projects, and preserves tribal rights including access to the recreation area for cultural activities and procurement of forest products.
- Requires the Secretary to seek a memorandum of understanding with applicable Indian Tribes regarding access to the recreation area in Oregon for historical, cultural, and traditional activities.
