Chief Herbert D. Proffitt Act of 2025

What it does
- Amends the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to define a retired law enforcement officer as one who separated from service in good standing at a public agency.
- Makes retired law enforcement officers eligible for public safety officers' death benefits if they died or became permanently disabled as a direct result of a targeted attack because of their prior law enforcement service.
- Applies the amendment retroactively to any matter pending before the Bureau of Justice Assistance or filed after the date of enactment, and to any action taken against a retired law enforcement officer on or after January 1, 2012.
