Expanded Consular Fellows Act of 2026

What it does

• Authorizes the Secretary of State to extend limited noncareer appointments for consular personnel to eight years instead of the current five-year maximum.
• Permits an additional two-year extension of limited noncareer appointments for consular personnel when required for the needs of the Foreign Service.
• Amends Section 309 of the Foreign Service Act of 1980 to add these extended appointment authorities for consular services positions.
