Build Nuclear with Local Materials Act of 2026

What it does

Requires the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to initiate a rulemaking within 90 days of enactment authorizing the use of commercial-grade steel and concrete in non-safety-related structures at nuclear power plants.
Permits the Commission to require stricter material standards only if it determines that doing so is necessary to address a specific safety risk and would not compromise common defense, security, or public health and safety under the Atomic Energy Act.
