Next-Generation Geothermal Research and Development Act

What it does
- Amends the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 to define next-generation geothermal systems as enhanced geothermal systems, closed-loop geothermal systems, and supercritical geothermal technologies.
- Directs the Department of Energy to establish a Next-Generation Geothermal Research and Development Program within the Geothermal Technologies Office to support research, development, demonstration, and commercial application of next-generation geothermal systems.
- Requires the Secretary of Energy to ensure at least one FORGE site has capabilities to test next-generation geothermal systems in supercritical conditions within 1 year of enactment.
- Directs the Secretary to award milestone-based grants for deep drilling projects in unique geodynamic settings covering tectonic stress characterization, laboratory work, drilling, flow testing, and power production.
- Directs the Department of Energy to establish and periodically update a geothermal drilling data repository that includes publicly available subsurface data from fossil fuel and mining operations, with standardized data collection through interagency memoranda of understanding.
