988 Lifeline Location Improvement Act of 2026

What it does
- Directs the Federal Communications Commission to initiate a notice of inquiry within 270 days of enactment addressing challenges to transmitting geolocation information with calls to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
- Requires the FCC to evaluate legal authorities, consumer privacy protections, technical feasibility, costs, and implementation standards for telecommunications providers and crisis centers regarding geolocation transmission.
- Directs the Comptroller General to conduct a study within 180 days of enactment and submit a report to Congress on opportunities and challenges for implementing geolocation for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
- Requires the GAO to consult with telecommunications providers, handset manufacturers, emergency communications centers, state and local governments, crisis centers, and disability services organizations when conducting the study.
