Route 66 National Historic Trail Designation Act
Sponsor: Ted Cruz (R-TX)
What it does
- Designates the Route 66 National Historic Trail as a component of the National Trails System, comprising all alignments of U.S. Highway 66 that existed between 1926 and 1985 and extending approximately 2,400 miles from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California.
- Requires the Secretary of the Interior to administer the trail while respecting its idiosyncratic nature and prohibits the use of eminent domain or condemnation to acquire land for the trail.
- Limits land acquisition to parcels within federally managed areas (with owner consent) or within an average of one-quarter mile on either side of the trail route.
- Preserves the authority of federal, state, and local agencies to grant easements and rights-of-way and protects existing energy development, production, transportation, and transmission activities from regulation or restriction as a result of trail designation.
- Mandates consultation with affected Indian Tribes prior to undertaking activities with substantial direct impacts on tribal interests, consistent with Executive Order 13175.
