Quantum-Enhanced Critical Minerals Mapping Act of 2026
Sponsor: Jeff Hurd (R-CO)
What it does
- Directs the Secretary of the Interior to establish and carry out a quantum-enhanced geophysical survey program within 180 days to improve detection and characterization of critical mineral and rare earth element deposits on or adjacent to Federal lands.
- Requires the Secretary to conduct mobile quantum gravity gradiometry surveys over at least 3 priority critical minerals focus areas identified under the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative, prioritizing western rare earth element zones.
- Directs the Secretary to compare quantum gravity gradiometry data with existing classical geophysical survey data to quantify improvements in resolution, depth penetration, and mineral deposit characterization.
- Mandates the Secretary to integrate all survey data into the Earth MRI national minerals database and make such data publicly accessible to mining and mineral exploration companies in a format compatible with existing Earth MRI platforms.
- Requires the Secretary to submit a report to Congress within 24 months detailing survey results, quantum versus classical methodology comparisons, private sector investment, and recommendations for scaling the program nationally.
