SELF DRIVE Act of 2026

What it does
- Amends title 49 to authorize NHTSA to establish motor vehicle safety standards for vehicles equipped with automated driving systems at Level 3, 4, or 5 automation.
- Requires manufacturers to develop and submit a safety case demonstrating compliance with ADS safety requirements before manufacturing or selling ADS-equipped vehicles.
- Directs the Secretary of Transportation to review SAE International definitions for automated driving systems within 180 days of release and determine whether to revise corresponding federal regulations within 120 days of any SAE definition update.
- Establishes provisions allowing NHTSA to regulate the security of connected vehicles and automated driving systems.
