Route 66 National Historic Trail Designation Act
Sponsor: Darin LaHood (R-IL)
What it does
- Designates the Route 66 National Historic Trail, spanning approximately 2,400 miles from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, following all alignments of U.S. Highway 66 in existence between 1926 and 1985.
- Directs the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the National Park Service Director, to administer the Route 66 National Historic Trail while respecting its idiosyncratic nature.
- Requires the Secretary of the Interior to conduct active, meaningful, and timely consultation with all affected Indian Tribes prior to undertaking any activity with substantial direct impacts on one or more tribes.
- Prohibits the United States from acquiring land or interests in land outside the exterior boundary of federally managed areas without owner consent or extending more than an average of one-quarter mile on either side of the trail.
- Specifies that the designation does not restrict energy development, production, transportation, or transmission, including pipelines and renewable energy projects, and does not authorize eminent domain or condemnation.
