BOP Direct-Hire Authority Act

What it does

• Grants the Director of the Bureau of Prisons the power to directly hire qualified candidates to competitive service positions without following standard federal hiring procedures.
• Exempts the authority from federal hiring rules in Title 5 U.S.C. chapter 33, except for sections 3303 and 3328, which retain applicability.
• Sunsets the direct-hire authority once 96 percent of competitive service positions at Bureau of Prisons facilities are filled.
