Civil Rights Cold Case Records Collection Reauthorization Act
Sponsor: Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ)
What it does
- Establishes a presumption that all Federal, State, and local government records concerning civil rights cold cases should be disclosed immediately and eventually released to inform the public.
- Authorizes the Civil Rights Cold Case Records Review Board to reimburse State and local governments in full for expenses incurred in digitizing, photocopying, or mailing civil rights cold case records for transmission to the National Archives.
- Removes an exception that previously allowed State and local governments to withhold civil rights cold case records from transmission to the Collection.
- Exempts information in civil rights cold case records created on or before January 1, 1990 from redaction under federal privacy protections (5 U.S.C. section 552(b)(6)).
